Design Director

SUMMARY: Formulates concepts and supervises workers engaged in creating design for on-air use, including commercials, promotion and news graphics as well as for non-air use, including web, mobile and social networking. Maintains quality and visual continuity of station graphic look both on-air and non-air by executing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Reviews illustrative material and confers with Director of Marketing, client or individual responsible for presentation regarding budget, background information, objectives, presentation approaches, styles, techniques, and related production factors.

Directs and performs all Design Department duties, including graphic design, photography, collateral materials and set construction.

Applicants should be proficient in Adobe After-Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, Curious Maps, Deko, iNews and 3D programs.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Reviews, approves, and presents final designs to client or Director of Marketing for approval.

Performs duties of Graphic Designer to design graphics for on-air as well as KTVU.com and MobileKTVU.com.

Prepares and maintains department budget.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises seven employees in the Design department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university or art school and a minimum of 5 years experience in a TV station Design department with previous supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, etc.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of television graphics, set construction, associated materials and equipment of on-air and print art, photography and knowledge of web and mobile design.
