Maintenance Engineer

SUMMARY: Primarily responsible for repair and preventative maintenance of broadcast equipment--both IT/server-based and video-based--and the performance of related duties as required/assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Responsible for the overall performance of the station as defined by Engineering management. Works under the direction of Engineering management to research, obtain, and implement equipment, test devices, and perform maintenance/operating procedures.

Repairs and maintains broadcast systems, including systems that are computer-based.

Shares information and knowledge of this specialty area with other staff members, by adhering to the documentation requirements at KTVU, which include creating rack elevation views, block diagrams and detailed schematic and by training co-workers on new systems that you design and/or install.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; and at least four years related experience in TV station maintenance, including digital; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Particular emphasis will be placed on experience with software applications, operating systems and general-purpose troubleshooting in a network environment. Experience with layers 1, 2 and 3 network switches is considered a plus.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to present technical material verbally to small groups to support cross-training with fellow maintenance engineers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as adding and subtracting hours, minutes and seconds. Ability to work seamlessly between base-10 and base-16 numbering systems.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: SBE certifications desirable. Membership in IBEW union required. A+ and other computer based certifications are highly desirable.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: The ability to work with end-users of software-based systems in order to solve issues in large network-based systems is an important skill that is required. The ability to understand network-based communications links between corporate locations in other cities and the systems at KTVU will be required. Teamwork and the ability to get along with others is an essential function of the job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock and electromagnetic radiation. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
