Morning News Producer

SUMMARY: Produce and format news for KTVU Channel 2 morning and weekend newscasts by evaluating, finding, gathering and coordinating appropriate news material available from all news services. Plan, coordinate, and direct all the people and activities necessary to insure a balanced, accurate news program following the format, policy and guidelines established by the News Director and Executive Producers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

  • Consult with News Director and Executive Producer on new stories and materials developed by KTVU.
  • Prepare a list of news stories and visual materials for integration within the news program format.
  • Assign stories to anchors, writers, and editors for scripting, production and timing.
  • Develop graphics for production by Design Department.
  • Consult with Director, Anchor and other Producers on production needs.
  • Work in the Control Room during broadcast to oversee presentation and changes in format.
  • Must create and produce interesting, energetic and important newscasts that have the proper pace, flow and detail.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and supervise employees in editing, writing and reporting. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university in Journalism preferred. Actual experience may be substituted for certain educational requirements. A minimum of two years major-market TV News Producer or Assistant Producer/Writer experience or three years equivalent medium market experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and news stories in a concise, balanced manner free of bias, distortion or poor taste.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Must be thoroughly professional in all aspects of journalism. Must be well read on current affairs and have a wide-range working knowledge and understanding of general interest subjects.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Use of two-way radio, telephone, iNEWS newsroom computer system. Must be able to learn and perform computer desk-top editing of video.
