News Writer – Full Time

SUMMARY: Write clear, factual and unbiased news stories in the style assigned by the News Director and Executive Producers by performing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Research and write factual, balanced news stories, re-write wire copy and write news scripts from information supplied by reporters and other news sources, in an active, conversational style for broadcast television.
  • Coordinate and edit news videotape, to make the best use of video and sound. This includes desktop computer editing.
  • Work shift will likely involve early mornings and weekends.
  • Write news stories that communicate the interest and urgency of the news to viewers.
  • Ability and desire to produce newscasts on a fill-in basis are essential for this job.

Coach fellow employees on safe work practices as appropriate and contribute to the overall success of the company’s safety program.

Teamwork and the ability to get along with others is an essential function of the job. Angry, rude, disrespectful, insubordinate and uncooperative behavior can result in discipline, including termination.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university in Journalism or Communications preferred; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Newscast producing experience is a big plus, particularly if it includes using a newscast automation systems such as Grass Valley Ignite.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Must be thoroughly professional in all aspects of journalism. Must be well read on current affairs and have a wide-range working knowledge and understanding of general interest subjects.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: AFTRA union membership required.
