Cyclist critically injured by suspected DUI driver in Berkeley

BERKELEY (BCN/KTVU) - A Berkeley bicyclist was in critical condition Tuesday night after a suspected DUI driver hit and dragged her under his car.

Berkeley Police say the 42-year-old female cyclist was riding southbound on Fulton Street, near the U.C. Berkeley campus.

At about 5 p.m., as she passed through the intersection of Bancroft Way, a Toyota sedan traveling the same direction struck her.

Witnesses said the victim was pulled under the car, and dragged about 20 feet.

A fire department engine arrived within a few minutes, and used a jack to raise the car and rescue her.

The unidentified woman was wearing a helmet, but was unconscious when extricated, and rushed to the hospital.

The driver, identified as 47-year-old Berwick Haynes of Sunnyvale, remained at the scene, along with a male passenger.

Investigators said Haynes showed signs of impairment and was arrested for driving under the influence.

"Because of the severity of the cyclist's injuries, the Fatal Accident Investigation Team was called out to process the scene, " Police Lt. Dan Montgomery told KTVU.

"It's a little early to tell exactly where the bicycle and vehicle were, but there is no protected bike lane so it's 'share the roadway,.'" he added.

The area where the collision occurred offers good visibility and two traffic lanes in each direction.

Police said witnesses who saw the crash stayed with the woman until help arrived, and were able to provide statements.    

"Unfortunately this circumstance is more common than we'd like," observed Lt. Montgomery.
