Deadly crash shuts down San Tomas expressway
SANTA CLARA (BCN) - One person died when a car crashed into an electrical pole in Santa Clara Thursday morning, knocking out power to more than 2,700 customers, city officials said.
The crash was reported at 10:18 a.m. on San Tomas Expressway just north of El Camino Real.
The name of the driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, has not been released.
The crash affected 2,722 customers of Silicon Valley Power, the city-owned electric utility, and all northbound lanes of San Tomas Expressway remained partially closed as of 5:05 p.m., city officials said.
Power was restored to about 2,000 of the customers as of midday and more than 500 others will have power restored by about 2:30 p.m., but there are 174 customers, mostly located north of El Camino Real, who may be without power for several hours, city officials said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by Santa Clara police.
