Femi Kuti and Positive Force

The son of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Femi Kuti spent years playing in his father's band before eventually rising to stardom in his own right following his father's death in the late '90s. Since few artists can match his father's legacy of not only music but influence, Femi's relation as his son is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it's never been difficult for the bandleader to garner attention; on the other hand, no matter his individual accomplishments, Femi will forever be known as Fela's son.

Practicing a similar style of politically charged Afrobeat as his father while incorporating elements of hip hop and dance music to modernize the sound, Femi helped introduce the percussive blend to the international masses with his solo releases for MCA beginning in 1999. Leading Positive Force, the same kind of expanded ensemble his father fronted featuring numerous percussionists and dancers, Kuti won tremendous critical praise for his studio efforts and electrifying, politically charged live performances. Touring to promote his most recent album Africa For Africa, Kuti is sure to exhaust his audience with a typically kinetic marathon show.
