A British quartet that mines the sounds of classic '60s and '70s sounds of gritty Hammond B-3 organ trios and instrumental funk combos like The Meters and James Brown's incendiary backing group The JBs, The New Mastersounds deliver a modern take on vintage soul-jazz, funk and rock.

The prolific group formed over a decade ago in Leeds when guitarist/producer was running a vintage funk/soul night called "The Cooker" that moved to a new venue that had space for a live band to perform. Teaming with past collaborator drummer Simon Allen, bassist Pete Shand and organ player Bob Birch, the foursome brewed up a hard-grooving style of funky boogaloo that quickly found an audience.

As a band and as individuals, the members of The New Mastersounds collaborated or jammed with an impressive array of talent that ranges from veteran originators of the earlier era (Blue Note saxophonist Lou Donaldson, jazz guitar great Melvin Sparks, James Brown/P-Funk horn players Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker and New Orleans legends George Porter Jr. and Art Neville) to more modern purveyors of neo-soul and funk (singer Corinne Bailey Rae and Carleen Anderson, producers/DJs Quantic, Keb Darge & Kenny Dope, Mr Scruff, Snowboy, and Portishead mainstay Andy Smith (Portishead).

Their first single, "One Note Brown," was released on Blow It Hard Records in 2000 and was passionately championed by acclaimed Northern Soul and funk DJ Keb Darge. To date, the band has issued five studio efforts as well as a remix collection and two live albums (including one recorded at San Francisco club the Independent).

Last year, the band released the follow-up effort to their first ever U.S. recorded album Breaks From The Border entitled Out on the Faultline. Recorded in San Francisco and Oakland, the album features guest appearances by members of local groove institution The Jazz Mafia as well as New Orleans guitarist Papa Mali. The band comes back to its home away from home on its current U.S. tour, playing three nights at the Boom Boom Room starting Valentine's Day.
