Crafting its daring experimental take on metal, punk and industrial sounds for over a quarter century, Oakland-based group Neurosis has developed an international reputation for pushing the boundaries of heavy music. After being founded in 1985 by guitarist/singer Scott Kelly, bassist Dave Edwardson and drummer Jason Roeder as crusty hardcore band heavily influenced by British punk group Amebix, Neurosis developed an influential sound that mixed sludgy, molasses-thick guitar crunch, sinister ambient drones and throat-shredding vocals into an original soundtrack for the apocalypse.
The doom-laden template crafted by the band on seminal '90s albums like Souls at Zero and Through Silver and Blood (the first album to featured later additions Steve Von Till on guitars and vocals and Noah Landis on keys) would be followed by countless metal experimentalists including Mastodon, Isis and Pelican. Though the band's dense, often harrowing music is far from an easy listen, the spiritual bent of the lyrics and the band's powerfully cathartic live show -- augmented by dazzling projected visuals courtesy of sixth member Josh Graham -- has brought the group a die-hard cult of fans.
Neurosis took some time away from the recording studio following its 2007 effort Given to the Rising (the in-concert document Live at Roadburn 2007 came out in 2010), but it members kept busy with a variety of projects including solo albums from Kelly and Von Till, Roeder playing drums for the reunited stoner-rock trio Sleep and Kelly's participation in the metal supergroup Shrinebuilder with doom legend Scott "Wino" Weinrich, Melvins drummer Dale Crover, and Sleep/Om bassist Al Cisneros. The band recently released Honor Found in Decay, it's first new album in five years, to wide acclaim. Building on the somber, epic sound Neurosis has refined since the turn of the millenium, songs range from crushing, riff-powered opener "We Rage in Gold" through the sprawling, cinematic dirges "At the Well" and "Casting of the Ages" that touch on the restrained, gothic Americana of Kelly and Von Till's solo work.
Neurosis celebrates Honor Found in Decay with this special hometown show at the Fox Theater, playing new songs and classic tracks from throughout the band's career. The group will be joined by like-minded Canadian thrash experimentalists Voivod (who will likely preview material from their forthcoming new album Target Earth) and celebrated Portland, OR-based doom merchants YOB.
