SONOMA, Calif. —

Now that the rainy, winter months are approaching the Bay Area, you may be thinking that a weekend jaunt to the wine country is out of the question. But before you opt for a day in the snow, consider heading to Ram’s Gate Winery. With its ideal location a mere 35 minutes from San Francisco, Ram’s Gate Winery makes it possible to enjoy wine tasting even on the coldest of days.

The winery, which to be honest, is how I picture my dream home to look, features several warm nooks to cozy up and enjoy your wine. From the fireside lounge to the state-of-the-art demonstration kitchen, to the members’ library and underground dining alcove, this rustic, refined barn-style winery is the kind of place I could happily spend a long afternoon at.

In fact, yesterday, I did just that. I arrived around 2pm and after a tour of the winery and vineyards, I settled in with Assistant Winemaker Jesse Fox and Executive Chef Taylr Behnam to taste their portfolio of estate and single-vineyard wines complimentedbylocally-sourced food pairings and creations made with ingredients from the winery’s own culinary garden and bee topiary.

It’s not often that I can say that enjoyed every wine on the list, but yesterday, I can honestly say that I was blown away. Everything I tasted left a lasting impression, but the real standout for me was the 2010 Carneros Pinot Noir. Receiving 93 points from Wine Spectator, this is a complex, medium bodied, wine full of earth and dark berry flavor. In an unhurried fashion, I savored it with a food pairing provided by Chef Behnam – a perfectly prepared lamb chop served with blueberry compote and Greek yogurt infused polenta.

I was fortunate to have the chance to speak with Jesse and Taylr about the wine and food program and was equally impressed by the level of attention that goes into the selection of each ingredient in order to get just the right flavor profile to bring out and enhance the flavors of the wine. The winery strives to engage all of your senses and offer an unrivaled Sonoma wine tasting experience, and in that, they are truly succeeding.

While Ram’s Gate’s focuses largely on the Carneros Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, they also produce incredible Syrahs, Sauvignon Blancs, Cabernet Sauvignons, and Sparkling Bruts, all crafted by Jesse and critically acclaimed Winemaker Jeff Gaffner.  Wines range in price from $28 to $74.

Ram’s Gate’s is open from 10am-6pm Thursdays-Mondays and offers private and public tastings, wine and food pairings, group activities as well as experiential offerings.  Appointments are recommended and to make a reservation, visit http://www.ramsgatewinery.com.
