Keane

With over 10 million in combined sales of their first two efforts (Hopes And Fears in 2004 and Under The Iron Sea in 2006), UK alt-rock band Keane brings its ringing anthems "Is It Any Wonder?" "Everybody's Changing" and "Somewhere Only We Know" to Oakland's Fox Theater Saturday.

One of Britain's best-loved bands, the group first came together around childhood friends Tim Rice-Oxley (keyboards) and Tom Chaplin (vocalist) while Rice-Oxley studying at University College London. Though his piano-playing skills led Chris Martin to invite Rice-Oxley to join his band Coldplay at one point, he decided to stick with his cover band The Lotus Eaters, which soon tranformed into Keane. After building a buzz with their live performances and self-released singles, the group was eventually signed to Island Records .

Though even more popular in Europe and the UK, the band has maintained a steady string of successes since its first two albums. Their 2008 effort Perfect Symmetry was named album of the year by Q Magazine while their follow-up EP Night Train garnered more rave reviews. Now expanded to a quartet with the official addition of bassist  Jesse Quin (who has been performing with the band since 2007), Keane return to the states to perform songs from their latest album Strangeland along with past favorites. A technicolor explosion of stellar pop songs and pure, unashamed energy, the new material is sure to have those in attendance brimming with at the swelling of each life-affirming chorus. Youngblood Hawke opens the show.
