Roy Hargrove Quintet

Dave Pehling

Trumpeter/composer Roy Hargrove may be just over 40 years old, but his professional career has already stretched over half his life as he's established a reputation as one of the most versatile and hardest working players in jazz. Achieving both critical and commercial success is no easy feat in the world of jazz, but the talented phenom has managed nicely.

Over the last decade as both a leader and high-profile collaborator (most notably with Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean and Herbie Hancock's Directions in Music project), Hargrove has impressed with his flexibility, dynamic style and wide-ranging tastes. In the past, Hargrove has performed at Yoshi's locations on both sides of the Bay with a big band, acoustic groups and his electric jazz-funk group RH Factor (which explored the type of music the trumpeter has made with such notable neo-soul collaborators as D'Angelo, Erykah Badu and Common).

For this run of shows in San Francisco, Hargrove comes to town with his quintet featuring Justin Robinson (reeds), Sullivan Fortner (piano), Ameen Saleem (bass) and Quincy Phillips (drums) performing in high-energy, soulful collaboration.
