Two Gallants

By Dave Pehling

Blending elements of confessional Dylanesque folk, tearful back-country blues and raging garage punk, Two Gallants have risen to become one of the more lauded underground bands that San Francisco has produced in the past decade.  Made up of vocalist/harmonica player/guitarist Adam Stephens and drummer Tyson Vogel, the duo has been playing a variety of public places in the Bay Area (street corners and Mission District BART stations being favorite venues) as well as touring the country extensively since 2002, long before they even had any recorded product to push.

Two Gallants worked with legendary producer & musician Jim Dickinson (Big Star, North Mississippi All-stars, The Replacements, Mudhoney) back in 2003, but their raw, emotional debut album 'The Throes' was tracked at a Berkeley studio in 2004 before getting released to solid reviews. The band's follow-up effort What the Toll Tells came out in 2006 on Saddle Creek to similarly high praise as Two Gallants continued to build its fan base at bigger venues (opening for Bloc Party at the Greek Theatre that year) while selling out its own shows at home and abroad.

After earning its best reviews yet with it's self-titled third album the following year, the duo's heft touring schedule and a mutual desire for something new led to a hiatus that found Stephens releasing his solo debut, the acclaimed We Live On Cliffs, in 2010 (Vogel put out his own solo album, Devotionals). Despite a near fatal tour van accident involving Stephens while on the road supporting his album, the following year Two Gallants announced an end to their over two-year hiatus with two sold-out shows at the Bottom of the Hill ahead of a brief West Coast tour and a full summer of dates in Europe. The duo finally released its fourth collection of songs -- the band's first in five years and its debut for new label ATO Records -- this past fall. The Bloom and the Blight received wide acclaim as the duo's most mature album yet without tempering the raw, emotional edge of the material and the ferocious energy of the two players. Two Gallants headlines this free Treasure Island "Bonfire Session" sponsored by Vice and Jansport early Saturday evening with The Fresh & Onlys, Safe and a special unannounced guest.
