Andrew Owsley (aka Wick-It The Instigator), a Nashville-based DJ and producer who has been gaining in notoriety over the past few years, pays a visit to the Bay Area for several appearances this week. First building a regional reputation for his participation in the popular monthly Mashville (which celebrated its fifth anniversary last fall), Wick-It The Instigator blew up on an global scale with his ferociously creative mixtape The Brothers of Chico Dusty.
Building crafty beats out of songs onThe Black Keys hit album Brothers and pairing them with acapellas drawn from OutKast rapper Big Boi's long-overdue solo effort Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty, Owsley offered up the mix for free download and quickly scored a boatload of glowing reviews from Spin Magazine and music blogs everywhere. While he also explores dubstep-influenced hip hop remixes and beat production, it's Owsley knack for surprising sonic collisions -- including club-ready remixes of Pink Floyd, Motley Crue and more -- that has kept his profile high.
While there's a wealth of remix projects inspired by the ever-quotable films of Quentin Tarantino (not to mention the director's always eclectic movie soundtracks), Wick-It The Instigator may have closed the books on such endeavors with his recent collection Grindhouse Basterds. The DJ brings his fluid mixing style to San Francisco venues for two performances this week including an appearance with Edit (Glitch Mob, Alpha Pup recordings),Lowriderz (An-Ten-Nae & Laura) Mochipet and more at 1015 Folsom's 12th annual Chinese New Year.
