Fairfield shooting causes crash, injures eight

FAIRFIELD, (KTVU) - A shooting Saturday afternoon in Fairfield left a person with life-threatening injuries and led to a three-car collision that injured a total of eight people, police said. 

At 3:20 p.m. multiple people called police to tell them about a collision near Waterman Boulevard and Hilborn Road, just west of Interstate Highway 80. 

Police said two vehicles were traveling on Waterman Boulevard when someone from another car opened fire on the driver in a silver Honda, striking him several times before he lost control. The driver of the Honda suffered life threatening injuries before losing control of the car, causing the collision which injured more people. 

“There were a total of eight people injured, one being the male with the gunshot wounds and the other seven either received minor injuries or were transported to local hospitals for precautionary reasons,” said Kathryn McCormick with Fairfield police. “The suspect vehicle was not at the scene and is still outstanding."

The shooting caused a backup on Interstate Highway 80 because the off-ramps from the highway to Air Base Parkway and Waterman Boulevard were closed, CHP spokeswoman Officer Dawn Dwyer said. 

One local resident who didn't want to be identified said this shooting in broad daylight makes her nervous.

"It happens way too often,” said the resident. “I mean there’s a shooting it seems like, not just weekly, but on a daily basis now, unfortunately. I've lived in Fairfield and Solano county since 1998 and it's gotten so bad.”

With very few witnesses police have little to go one but hope an extensive network of traffic cameras will lead to an arrest.
