Mother asks for justice for sons killed in Concord crash

CONCORD, Calif. (KTVU) - A San Pablo mother is speaking out for the first time since she and her children were involved in a fatal hit and run crash in Concord Friday night. 

Aida Reyes and her three children had gone to a drive-in movie in Solano and were on their way home from watching Despicable Me 3, when a driver with a suspended license ended up crashing into their Dodge Durango, killing two young boys inside, ages 5 and 10, the California Highway Patrol said.

"Words just aren't enough to describe the insurmountable pain and heartache a parent feels after losing a child," Reyes said. "The way I feel right now I wish I had perished along with my children so I could be with them. But I have to be strong and I have to be here for my baby who is in critical condition. I have to be here to give him support so I can get justice for his brothers." 

The mother and 3-month-old baby, identified by a family friend as Luciano, also suffered severe injuries and were taken to the hospital.  According to CHP Officer Brandon Correia, the baby is in critical condition at Children's Hospital in Oakland. The mother was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, he said.

Family friend Judy Lent identified Reyes' sons as Lorenzo and Vincent before KTVU had spoke with the mother. 

The Contra Costa County Coroner confirmed the boys are 10-year-old Lorenzo Reyes, and 5-year-old Vincent Reyes-Rothenberg. They were killed in the crash along Highway 4.

Reyes was surrounded by the support of her family and close friends outside UCSF Benioff Children's hospital Monday night as she tried to convey the pain she's feeling after losing her sons. All while her 3 month old son "Luchi " clings to life inside the hospital as she prays for a miracle.

"My children were good boys they were bright boys and you just don't understand the damage that you have done," Reyes said to the driver. "From a mother to mothers to fathers and sisters and brothers please ask for justice for my Reyes boys." 

"Aida was such a good mother," Lent told KTVU on Monday. "She never went anywhere without her boys."  Lent said Reyes was planning on opening her own massage therapy business.

Vincent's father broke down to KTVU in an interview on Sunday.

Lawrence Rothenberg said his 5-year-old son had just graduated pre-school and was such a kind spirit. "I feel like my world is over," Rothenberg said. "I work hard in life for him. It's not for me."

The crash was first reported just before 11 p.m. on Friday night, and the driver, who has been identified as Lemuel Sirvonn Wilson Jr., has turned himself in to police. The CHP says they arrested Wilson for vehicular homicide, hit-and-run causing great bodily injury, and driving on a suspended/ revoked driver's license causing injury. Wilson's bail was set at $500,000.

According to police, a man driving an Infiniti sedan drove off of the road at the Solano Avenue off-ramp and crashed into a Dodge Durango that was on the on-ramp from Solano Avenue. The collision caused the Durango to be pushed sideways to the edge of the on-ramp and the Infiniti was catapulted into the Kinders parking lot.

A witness told KTVU that the man in the SUV got out of his car, fell once, and took off on foot. He suffered minor injuries and went to Highland Hospital. Wilson's wife, Onika Wilson, told KTVU that as soon as he saw what happened on TV, he turned himself into police.

Onika said, "Me and my husband send our condolences out to the family and you guys are in our prayers. I know what you guys are going through".

In June of last year, Onika's daughter, 16-year-old Reggina Jeffries, was shot and killed in downtown Oakland hours after performing a dance at a funeral for two friends. That case has not been solved.

Police are unsure if drugs or alcohol were factors and are continuing to investigate the crash.
