Fatal crash in Antioch, SUV slams into tree

An SUV driver died early Thursday morning in Antioch, after the silver vehicle appeared to barrel into a center divide and then a tree, according to neighbors and video at the scene.

The single-vehicle crash was reported about 1  a.m. near Buchanan Road and Balboa Court. Roads in this area were closed at 5 a.m., when there was a heavy police presence, and reopened about four hours later.

Officials have not stated much about what happened. Early in the morning, a crime lab technician told KTVU that her team is called out every time there is an "officer-involved" situation. An investigator also said that a representative from the District Attorney's Office would be making a statement later on.

Video provided by EastCountyToday.net show that first responders broke windows to free the driver from the SUV, which later burst into flames.

Larry Rogers said he woke up to hear two big bangs and saw the SUV smoking. He brought out a powerful flashlight to see what happened. When he shined it on the scene, he said "no one was moving."

Rogers has lived in the neighborhood for 40 years and has put up a retaining wall around his house because he said people speed in that area all the time.
