Flaming gas leak burns through water main, turns into water leak

Firefighters responding to a broken gas main that caught fire in Menlo Park tonight say the 6-foot flames burned through a water main, extinguishing the fire, but now water is spraying 10 feet into the air.

Around 8:30 p.m., Chief Harold Schapelhouman with the Menlo Park Fire District, said the fire was burning in the street in the 300 block of Sand Hill Circle, but there was no threat to structures at the time.

The fire was out by 9 p.m., but gas was still leaking out.

Firefighters were evacuating a nearby apartment complex while eliminating and securing "potential points of ignition," Schapelhouman said.
