Gun buy-back collects 280 guns, rocket launcher, bazooka

A bazooka, rocket launcher and a cannonball were turned in to police today as part of a "no questions asked" gun buyback in San Francisco, the executive director of the sponsoring group said.

The two weapons and the round shot were part of 28 items in addition to the 280 guns taken off the streets between 8 a.m. and noon at 1038 Howard St., United Playaz executive director Rudi Corpuz Jr. said.

United Playaz is a violence prevention youth organization.

It partnered with many organizations, including the Brady Campaign, to hold the buyback.

"I am not against the Second Amendment but I am against senseless gun violence," Corpuz said, adding that he's been a victim of senseless gun violence himself.

Each person who turned in a handgun received $100 and each person who turned in an assault weapon received $200.

Corpuz said all the promotion for the event was done by 10 men who were serving life sentences and are now on parole.

They didn't attend the buyback because that would violate their parole, but they spread the word by passing out flyers among other work.
