A Florida brewery has created a product in hopes of saving sea turtles and other marine life.

Although plastic six-pack rings are affordable and considered one of the best packaging design solutions for beverage cans, many end up in the ocean threatening the lives of sea creatures.

Wildlife can get entangled in the plastic rings. Animals like sea turtles and birds also eat the rings, which causes digestive issues, and often leads to death.

Saltwater Brewery along with We Believers decided to confront the problem by creating edible six-pack rings. If the packaging ends up in the ocean, instead of harming animals, the packaging will provide food.

The packaging if made from byproducts of the beer brewing process including barley and wheat.

According to Saltwater Brewery, the edible six-pack rings are the first ever 100% biodegradable, compostable and edible packaging implemented in the beer industry.

They are hoping other companies will also implement this type of packaging, in hopes of protecting more marine life.
