Kite surfer dies after rescue attempt at Alameda's Crown Beach

A kite surfer died Friday at Alameda's Crown Beach according to Alameda Fire Department. 

The adult male was found face down in the water late in the afternoon. He had been kite surfing the San Francisco Bay off the Alameda coast a fire captain said.

Fire officials received a call at 4:26 p.m. about an unresponsive kite-surfer who was being brought to shore by another kite-surfer at Crown Memorial State Beach at Eighth Street and Otis Drive, Capt. Jim Colburn said. 

Bystanders performed CPR on the victim until an ambulance arrived and took over.

Emergency responders worked frantically to revive him, using an AFD. The victim was transported to the Alameda Hospital where he was  pronounced dead. 

The other kite surfer appeared to be alright. 

Colburn said Alameda police are investigating the death.
