Bottle labeled nitroglycerin causes San Jose school evacuation

- Students and staff from Bridges Academy in San Jose were evacuated for about an hour on Friday morning because of an explosive threat after a custodian found a bottle labeled "nitroglycerin' in a backpack.

Sgt. Enrique Garcia said the chemical was removed before 11 a.m. and would be tested to determine its exact contents.

Lt. Mike Sullivan said a custodian found a backpack with the 750 ml bottle labeled "nitroglycerin" at the school and called authorities to investigate shortly before 10 a.m.. Nitroglycerin is commonly sued to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.

Police cars and fire trucks were on scene about 10 a.m. and yellow tape surrounded the school at 1702 McLaughlin Ave.
