San Francisco police are looking for the thief who smashed a car into the Yves Saint Laurent store in San Francisco's Union Square on Wednesday and took off with some merchandise.

Police said some type of vehicle backed into the Geary Street store about 4:30 a.m., smashing the windows of the high-end store, causing it to shatter.

The driver went into the store and stole a number of items, police said. The driver got back into the vehicle and fled westbound on Geary. It's unknown just how many heels and handbags were taken.

Police did not have a suspect or vehicle description.

Yellow crime scene tape surrounded the high-end store, where a car tire was left strewn on the sidewalk.

Stores throughout the Bay Area have fell victim to smash-and-grab burglaries over the last several years. A store manager said someone tried to break in to her business six times this year.
