Assault suspect crashes into cement truck after police chase

- OAKLAND (KTVU) -- An assault suspect who was chased by police crashed a car into a cement truck in East Oakland Tuesday afternoon.

Police and rescue workers were called to the area of 98th and Edes after a multi-vehicle crash. Authorities initially said multiple injuries were possible.

The incident occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. at Railroad and 98th streets.

Police said five females, including two children, were in a gray car that collided with the cement truck. Oakland officer Marco Marquez  said the ages of the car's occupants ranged from 3 to 32 years old.

Police were initially called to a separate scene at 88th and International streets after receiving a report of  a fight in the area. When police arrived, the female suspect allegedly ran into an officer and fled from the scene, authorities said. The officers pursued the vehicle.

Another officer chased the suspect in the gray car, eastbound down Edes. The cement truck heading south on 98th apparently had the green light  and that's when the vehicles collided.

Aerial pictures from the scene show a vehicle slightly underneath the cement truck.

“I heard a car and I turned around and seen it. I couldn’t figure out if it wanted to stop or keep going.  It kept going and it hit the cement truck. Me and my son were literally at the intersection so I tried to pull him back and he starts crying. It just scared us so bad,” said Kaylund Jackson a witness.

The female suspect who was driving the vehicle was initially pinned inside the Chevrolet Impala before being extracted. She was placed on a stretcher, pictures from the scene showed. Another woman, the suspect, was placed in handcuffs, put on a stretcher and put in an ambulance. Eventually all five female passengers were taken to hospitals.

It was not immediately clear if anyone would be charged in connection with the incident and identities were pending.

The condition of the women inside the car is not known.
