Spare the Air alert issued for second straight day in Bay Area

Spare the Air

Soaring inland temperatures forecasted for parts of the Bay Area are prompting another Spare the Air alert for Wednesday.

It will be the second straight day and 13th time in 2018 that local air quality officials have warned of smog pollution reaching unhealthy levels.

Wednesday's forecast calls for high inland temperatures and light winds, conditions which exacerbate the effects of pollution from vehicles in the region.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is encouraging residents to find alternatives to driving alone, such as taking public transit or carpooling.

Unhealthy levels of air pollution can cause throat irritation and chest congestion or pain and can trigger asthma or inflame the lining of lungs, according to health officials. There are also concerns elevated levels of smog can aggravate conditions related to bronchitis and emphysema.

Residents can find out when a Spare the Air alert is in effect as well as more information about the air quality in the region by going to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District's website here
