Laney College gets $1 million award for innovative program

Students at Oakland's Laney College stand to benefit from a $1 million award the college received from a special state fund to promote innovations at California community colleges, school officials said.

The Innovation in Higher Education Award was announced Tuesday by officials with the California Department of Finance.

Laney College is one of 14 institutions statewide to receive the award.

The college was selected because of its 5-year proposal to help students taking classes in science, technology, engineering and math succeed by giving them access to better technology and learning environments.
