KTVU/TV36 Internship Program

KTVU Channel 2 and KICU TV36 offers a college internship program three times a year: Spring, Summer and Fall.  Students are provided a chance to experience the working environment of television broadcasting in the fields of sales, news/sports and community affairs.

KTVU/TV36 holds an Open Call for college interns in the months of May, August/September and December.   Open Calls are held at the KTVU studios, located at 2 Jack London Square, Oakland, CA 94607. Free parking is available. No RSVP necessary.  Students should bring in multiple copies of their job application, internship application and resume for the Open Call if students intend to interview with several departments.

The Open Call for Fall 2013 internships will be in August.  Day and date in August will be posted in July 2013.

Students must be enrolled in an accredited four year college and must be juniors, seniors or graduates in a graduate program and must be receive course credit for their internship. Students will be paid the current minimum wage in the city of Oakland during their participation in the internship program. Days and hours will be determined between the department and the student’s college schedule with no more than 20 hours per week.

Internship Requirements:

College students must meet these requirements to quality for a KTVU/TV36 internship.

  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited four year college.
  • Be a junior, senior or graduate student in a graduate program.
  • Provide a letter on school letterhead from an advisor or professor stating that the student is enrolled in school during the current semester/quarter and will be receiving course credit.
  • Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Employment requirements:

  • Fill out a KTVU/TV36 job application
  • Fill out a KTVU/TV36 internship application
  • Answer the internship questionnaire
  • Students will be required to have a background check and drug test before the start date.
  • Provide proof of US Citizenship and Immigration status.

KTVU/TV36 NEWS & SPORTS:  Mon-Sun/5am-11pm, 12 hours – 20 hours per week. General office work, heavy phone activity, pulling and viewing tapes for producers, writers and reporters.  Basic computer skills needed and experience with computer assisted research valuable.  Learn how to dig for stories, write good scripts and how a successful news operation works.  High interest in news and or sports desirable, respectively.

KTVU/TV36 COMMUNITY AFFAIRS: 2 interns per semester, 18 - 22 hours per week. General office work, heavy mail and phone activity.  Basic computer skills needed and computer researching skills a plus.  Learn how to produce a weekly studio-based, community oriented talk show. Duties include researching topics and booking guests and writing scripts.  Interns also help produce Public Service Announcements, may go on location, will be script logging, script writing and in general, learn about production needs.  Interest in news and community issues a must. 

TV36 SALES: 1-2 interns per semester, 15-20 hours per week. Learn about television sales; work with Account Executives and Sales Managers on research, ratings, and projections. Basic computer skills needed—Excel with PowerPoint is a plus.
