WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KTVU) - The countdown is on for Tesla to reveal its new Model 3 car and people are already lining up around the world to reserve their spot in line for one.
The Fremont-based company is unveiling the Model 3 car Thursday night, even though the first cars won’t be delivered until Dec. 2017.
The first reservations have already been made in Australia. People are lining up in cities around the world, and it is no different in the Bay Area.
Sebastian Vollering has claimed the first spot in line outside the Tesla store at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek.
“I got here just before 10 a.m. today so about 24 hours ahead of time,” Vollering said.
He explained why he is a Tesla fan.
“They represent the energy future, independence from foreign oil, sustainability when it comes to transportation, and they’re all American made,” he said
No one knows what the Model 3 will look like yet. Tesla founder Elon Musk will unveil it Thursday night in
Southern California at 8:30 p.m., marking the company's first electric mainstream car.
The car starts at $35,000 and Tesla is asking for a $1,000 deposit to make a reservation. Reservations can be made at any Tesla store Thursday morning or online Thursday night after the unveiling.
Vollering knows he will like car, so much so, he is willing to sleep outside for the chance to get one.
"I just have a sleeping bag and a pad. If the mall doesn’t kick me out I plan just to sleep here outside," he said.
