Man fatally shot after holding wife and baby at gunpoint at Pittsburg home

PITTSBURG, Calif. (KTVU) - A 37-year-old man was fatally shot after allegedly holding his wife and baby at gunpoint at a home in Pittsburg.

According to Pittsburg Police, officers were called to the home in the 100 block of Carolyn Drive where they learned an estranged husband had arrived at a home, and held his wife and baby at gunpoint. 

According to police, a family member attempted to intervene, and the man fired his gun - hitting the family member in the neck. 

At that point the man allegedly forced his wife and baby into his vehicle and drove away. 

Pittsburg Police pursued the vehicle to Concord and back to Pittsburg. 

The man stopped his vehicle in front of a home in the 100 block of West 10th Street. Police report as the man got out of the vehicle with the gun, his estranged wife was able to run with the baby to nearby officers. 

The man ran into the home and barricaded himself inside. 

A negotiation team arrived and continued to communicate with the man, trying to get him to leave the home without the gun. 

Police say the man returned to the front door several times with the gun, not listening to commands to put down the weapon.  

According to police, a less lethal projectile was discharged toward the man in an attempt to detain him. At that point, the man allegedly raised his gun and fired at officers. 

Officers returned fire and the man was hit. He was taken by ambulance to John Muir Hospital where he died. 

The man's name has not yet been released. 

The shooting is being investigated.
