Robert Mondavi winery hosting free 50th anniversary party

One of most respected and popular wineries in Napa Valley is celebrating a special milestone Saturday.

The Robert Mondavi Winery is holding a big bash for its 50th anniversary.

The event runs from noon to 4 p.m. at the winery on 7801 St. Helena Highway, in Oakville.

Staff at the vintner talked to KTVU's Christien Kafton about the event. which includes tours of the complex, cooking demonstrations, and wine tastings.

On Saturday's Mornings on 2, Christien sipped some of the winery's top selections, went up in a hot air balloon over the property, received a lesson for pan-roasted halibut, and took a horse-and-buggy ride through the expansive property.

The anniversary part is free, but attendees are told to arrive early, especially to take part in some of the festive events.

Mondavi opened his world famous winery in 1966.

The winery says the vineyard it is known for growing Sauvignon Blanc grapes, which help craft his trademark wine, Fume Blanc.

Mondavi passed away in 2008, at the age of 94.

But administrators say his legacy will forever carry on.
