A mountain lion may have gotten away with a dog this morning from the bedroom of a home in the unincorporated San Mateo County community of Pescadero, sheriff's officials said.

At about 3 a.m., a 15-pound Portuguese Podengo was at the end of a bed of a home in the area of 800 Native Sons Road and began barking.

The barking woke up a woman in the home who was sleeping with a child in the bedroom with its French doors open so the dog could get out, according to the sheriff's office.

Following the barking, the woman looked up and saw the shadow of an animal. The animal snatched the dog from the end of the bed and walked out, sheriff's officials said.

When the woman turned on a flashlight to look for the dog, she saw wet paw prints at the entrance to the bedroom and called 911.

Deputies went to the home and saw paw prints that they believe are from a mountain lion.

Sheriff's officials have been in touch with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for any necessary follow-up investigation.

Deputies are reminding residents to lock their home's windows and doors at night.
