DALY CITY, Calif. (KTVU) - Law enforcement agencies aren't saying much about what looks like a major multi-agency police action across two cities on the Peninsula; Daly City and South San Francisco.
Our crew reported they saw at least six people detained in South San Francisco. In Daly City, three men were seen in handcuffs being walked out to a van. KTVU has also learned arrests have been made.
Officers from a number of agencies were outside Daly City's City Hall, where a command center was set up Tuesday afternoon.
A source told KTVU hundreds of federal warrants were issued as part of this operation. A KTVU photographer at the scene says multiple people can be seen in San Mateo County Sheriff's deputies' custody.
Around 7 a.m., a quiet morning was disrupted when officers responded to at least two homes on Commercial Avenue near Eucalyptus in South San Francisco.
South San Francisco Police Department, ATF, CHP and San Mateo County Sheriff's officers were there in tactical gear.
Neighbors say they were awakened by a loud noise.
"I heard a percussion grenade go off and that's what scared me," says Ron Claghorn, a neighbor.
He got out his cell phone and started recording. "This is the percussion grenade smoke right there," says Claghorn as he pointed to the video he shot.
Neighbors say a man in his 30s with school-age boys live in one of the homes.
They say there's been a constant stream of young people coming and going.
One neighbor who declined to give her name made reference to smelling marijuana smoke and said there's always noise going on late at night.
Area residents say police have responded to that home before, so they're not surprised by this large scale law enforcement crackdown. They welcome it, concerned about the suspicious activity they say has been taking place.
"People pulling up, going to the side of the house and somebody handing something to somebody and then leaving," says Claghorn.
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Department says Daly City Police Department is in charge of the operation.
KTVU also learned that similar police activity took place in San Francisco's Sunnydale public housing and at individual homes.
San Francisco Police Department says the law enforcement operation is ongoing and that for the safety of all involved, they had no further information at this time.
KTVU has been told there will be a press conference Thursday morning about this operation where multiple agencies will be there, including the district attorneys from San Francisco and San Mateo counties
