An armed man was shot and killed by a Napa County Sheriff's deputy in a rural part of the county on late Sunday night, according to sheriff's officials.

Spokesman Henry Wofford said a female deputy was patrolling the 1100 block of Henry Road around 10:59 p.m. when she came upon a male driver inside a 2006 Honda. She went to check on him to see if he was OK because he had pulled over to the side of the road, Wofford said.

At 11:05 p.m., the deputy reported that shots had been fired. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and had a firearm in his possession.

On Monday afternoon, the Napa County Sheriff said that the suspect with gun opened fire first, from his car, prompting the deputy to fire her gun. Authorities are now reviewing body camera video to see exactly what happened.

The names of slain man and the deputy are not yet being released.
