LIHUE, Hawaii —
Rescuers in Kauai say they have recovered the body of one of two San Francisco men who drowned, but rough seas kept them from searching for the other man.
Adam Griffiths, 46 and 47-year-old Brian Baker are believed to have drowned while on vacation in Kauai this weekend.
Instead of a rescue, the Kauai Fire Department began a recovery mission on Friday to retrieve the bodies of Griffiths and Baker.
The two men were part of a group of five friends vacationing in Kauai. It was Griffith's birthday and he would have turned 47 Saturday.
According to Kauai officials, the group decided to hike out to a rocky, remote area south of Kalihiwai Bay on the north shore of the island Friday afternoon.
A rogue wave swept Baker out to sea. Griffiths jumped in to tried and save him, but neither one survived.
“The water was just so rough there was no way he could get himself back to land and back out of the water,” said Beth Tokioka, Kauai County communications director. “The island mourns with them, this is really a tragic event."
Officials were able to retrieve Griffith’s body from the sea Saturday morning. The high surf made it too difficult to continue the operation and find Baker. They were still searching Sunday afternoon.
“They had a jet ski in the water yesterday to see if that would help in the search and the waters were just too choppy,” Tokioka said. “Today, I'm told the conditions are about the same. Very, very rough surf once again, but they are hoping they'll be able to spot something from the helicopter.”
Because of a high surf advisory in Kauai, authorities have closed all of their north shore beaches.
The victims’ three surviving friends are still in Hawaii receiving grief counseling services from a local non-profit that caters to visitors.
