Berkeley Officials To Vote On Bush Impeachment Ballot Initiative

The city wants to let voters decide whether to call for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

The City Council was scheduled to vote Tuesday night whether to put a measure on the Nov. 7 ballot.

If approved, it would create a task force to monitor the president and vice president at a cost of $10,000.

Supporters include Mayor Tom Bates and the city's Peace and Justice Commission, who argue for impeachment based on the handling of the Iraq war, federal wiretapping and other issues.

Dozens of cities, including San Francisco and Oakland, have passed resolutions calling for impeachment, but supporters say Berkeley would be the first city asking voters to decide.

The move would be largely symbolic: Only Congress has impeachment powers.
