OAKLAND, Calif. —
Members of the Oikos University community took a step forward in their own healing process Friday during a campus memorial concert following the gruesome and tragic events that unfolded Monday and left seven dead and three injured.
A group of musicians played on the school's steps in front of a backdrop of new plywood that covered shattered windows and doors at the East Oakland school. The grief over what happened Monday was still fresh on the faces of teachers and school officials.
For the school community, the focus remains on the victims, whose pictures were displayed for anyone who stops by the campus memorial.
Friday's concert brought some to tears, but also had special meaning for violinist and Oikos University music instructor Sue-Mi Shin.
“It was very difficult," Shin said. "Nothing's enough to say about this."
Hours before Friday's memorial, police found a gun in a shallow part of a waterway along Leet Street and Hegenberger.
Oakland police spokeswoman Cynthia Perkins said that the weapon matches the serial number of a gun purchased by One Goh, who was recently charged in the fatal shooting of seven people at Oikos University on Monday.
"Investigators have worked very hard on this case. Hopefully, this find will help the families find closure and bring this case to justice," Police Chief Howard Jordan said in a prepared statement.
Perkins said the gun was discovered in a waterway in the 8400 block of Leet Street. Further investigation and testing is needed to confirm if it was used in the incident.
Police said Goh, 43, used a .45-caliber handgun to kill seven students at Oikos University and wound three others in a shooting rampage Monday. He has been charged with seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, plus a special circumstance allegation of committing multiple murders that could make him eligible for the death penalty.
Goh did not enter a plea or make a statement during his first court appearance Wednesday.
Police said Goh acknowledged forcing a woman from her office at gunpoint into a classroom, where he fatally shot several people before fleeing in one victim's car, according to a police affidavit.
Goh drove to nearby Alameda after the shooting where he was arrested without incident outside a Safeway super market parking lot.
At the time of his arrest, Goh did not have a weapon with him.
Authorities have been searching the murky waters of San Leandro Bay, about a half-mile from the school, with divers and a remote underwater sonar device along the shoreline of a park adjunct to the Oakland International Airport. Overnight, the search was moved to a nearby canal that runs along Hegenberger Road and is near the shooting scene. It was in the low tide waters where a handgun was recovered, authorities said.
The gun will now be forensically tested to see if it matches spent shells found at the scene.
The school said it will remember the victims by holding a concert six days a week for the rest of the month.
In a brief statement on behalf of the school, teacher Lucas Garcia said administrators are cooperating with law enforcement and are offering counseling to families and students who need it.
With spring break scheduled for next week, school officials said they're still deciding whether to resume classes after that.
One person began cleaning the steps of the school Friday and the cleaning has also begun inside.
