Castro Goodwill To Employ Transgender Staff

SAN FRANCISCO —

A new Goodwill store in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood that opened Saturday afternoon will be providing much need jobs for those in the transgender community.

Many of the store's employees are transgendered people.

Activists say only half of transgender people in California have full time jobs, even though they are twice as likely as other workers to have earned a bachelor's degree.

The pop-up store is located on Market St. at the former Tower Records.

The city teamed up with Goodwill to create a positive place for them to work.

"Seventy percent of transgender community members have experienced employment discrimination or harassment on the job because of who they are," said Kristina Wertz, legal director of the Transgender Law Center.

Activists hope to create partnerships with Goodwill stores across the country to provide jobs and training for the transgender community.
