A 19-year-old is facing manslaughter charges for allegedly driving drunk and causing an accident that killed one person Saturday night.
The crash happened around 10:45 p.m. on 14th Street near the Davis Street intersection. Police said 19-year-old Jesus Antonio Godinez of Vallejo was allegedly speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol when he swerved into oncoming traffic and hit a car head on.
A 32-year-old driver in the other car was killed instantly and his 56-year-old passenger was injured. Both men were from San Leandro.
“It was a very bad collision,” Mark Clifford with San Leandro police said.
Amy Robeson heard the accident from her home nearby.
“It’s not the sound you hear in the movies,” she said. “It was more of a crumpling crush.”
Resident Rick Mesquite called the accident senseless and preventable. He lives about a block away from the site of another fatal DUI crash in the city two weeks ago.
On March 8 a man was killed when his cousin, the alleged drunk driver, hit another car at the intersection of Washington and Castro.
Clifford said these situations are always sad circumstances.
“San Leandro Police recognizes this,” he said. “We have a history of taking a proactive steps toward reducing driving under the influence, from traffic stops to doing bar checks.”
Clifford said more can be done with the help of the public choosing to be responsible when they get behind the wheel.
“It’s awful,” Robeson said. “These things do happen, but there is no excuse for it.”
Mesquite echoed her message and said accidents are so tragic when they could have easily been avoided.
“Just don’t drink and drive,” he added.
Godinez remained in a hospital Sunday evening guarded by police officers. He is expected to recover from his injuries and once he is released he will be taken to Santa Rita Jail. Godinez faces one count of gross vehicular manslaughter.
