RICHMOND, Calif. —

The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office arrested a 19-year-old Richmond man Tuesday in connection with a North Richmond murder earlier this year, a sheriff's spokesman said.

Leon Norford was arrested on suspicion of killing 23-year-old Lonnie Peterson of Richmond on April 17 in the 500 block of Market Avenue in North Richmond, spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Norford was already in custody today at the Martinez Detention Facility for an unrelated crime in Richmond, Lee said.

Tuesday's arrest stems from a fatal shooting where Peterson was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head and another shooting victim was hit in the leg.

Both victims were transported to the hospital, where Peterson succumbed to his injuries on April 18. The other shooting victim survived.

Since April, investigators had recovered the suspect vehicle in the city of Richmond and had named Norford as the suspect in the drive-by shooting.

Norford was charged Tuesday with homicide, attempted homicide and gang participation.
