ANTIOCH, Calif. —

Police are investigating the killing of a young man near an Antioch elementary school Wednesday afternoon.

The murder occurred around 12:20 p.m. at the intersection of William Reed Drive and West Madill Street, less than a block from Marsh Elementary School, according to Lt. Diane Aguinaga.

The man has been identified as a 20-year-old Antioch resident, she said.

Information about how the man was killed was not immediately available.

Anthony Vieira, a senior citizen who lives near the scene of the killing, said he "jumped up" when he heard sirens this afternoon and later saw a man lying in the street.

Emergency responders later covered the man's body with a yellow tarp and blocked off the area with caution tape, Vieira said.

"Whoever he is, I feel sorry for him," he said.

Vieira said that since he moved to the neighborhood about four years ago, he has noticed an up-tick in crime.

"Things like this happen every day -- what we can do about it, I don't know," he said.

Marsh Elementary was not placed on lockdown because of the incident, a school employee said.
