OAKLAND, Calif. —

A suspicious item reported at an Alameda County Superior Court building in Oakland Friday morning was determined to be a backpack full of tools, according to an Alameda County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The suspicious item was reported around 9:45 a.m. in the tunnel area of the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse at 1225 Fallon St., Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

The sheriff's bomb squad remotely opened the backpack and found it was full of tools, Nelson said.

After it was opened, a man claimed the backpack, saying he had stashed it away because he knew it wouldn't go through metal detectors at the courthouse, Nelson said.

The bag was returned to the man and he was not arrested.

The building was not evacuated, and deputies gave the all-clear around 11:35 a.m., Nelson said.
