OAKLAND, Calif. —

Holiday travelers witnessed a frightening scene Wednesday evening on a busy Oakland freeway – gunmen in two speeding cars shooting it out.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident began on westbound I-580 around 8:30 p.m. near the Seminary Ave. exit.

Arriving officers could not locate any victims in the shooting, but two vehicles with bullet holes were abandoned and left behind.

The westbound lanes were closed for more than two hours as investigators combed the scene for any clues in the shooting.

"Fortunately there were no innocent bystanders that were hit by those rounds because bullets and things like that are very indiscriminate," said California Highway Patrol officer Sam Morgan

Police detained a 16-year-old boy found on city streets nearby. They said he wasn't shot but was hurt as a result of the crash.

Investigators said no one has turned up at an emergency room with injuries related to the incident, but they are making progress in their investigation.

“We have some very good witnesses that called in so we're going to be following up on that aspect to try to determine what they saw and put this together,” Morgan said.

Several residents in the Oakland neighborhood heard what happened.

“It sounded like automatic gunfire,” said Oakland resident Bill Worley. “It sounded like it was moving from my left to my right, moving from this direction to this direction."

"I can't believe it,” said Oakland resident Joe Villa. “I lived in Oakland all my life and this is the worst I ever seen it and we're trying to find answers for it and I don't know if it's the schools or the parents or the lack of jobs. I think it's a combination of things."

CHP said the cars left behind had not been reported stolen.

The CHP is asking anyone who saw anything to come forward and witnesses can remain anonymous.
