FAIRFIELD, Calif. —

The body of a girl found in a Fairfield park Friday morning was last seen boarding a bus to school in Suisun City Thursday morning, police said.

The girl's body was found at Allan Witt Park Friday morning by a citizen, who flagged down an officer around 6:45 a.m. Friday, according to Fairfield police spokesman Officer Cleo Mayoral.

The girl, whose identity has not yet been released, was reported missing by a guardian Thursday night around 5:44 p.m. after she failed to return home from school, Suisun City police Commander Tim Mattos said.

Police in Suisun City had run out of leads around midnight Thursday night and were continuing the investigation Friday morning when they were contacted by Fairfield police, Mattos said.

Police added that the girl is a middle school student from Suisun City and had only lived in the area for a few months.

The parking lot and much of the surrounding park was cordoned off Friday morning as investigators swept in.

She was found nude, and her death is considered a homicide, Mayoral said. The girl's name and age have not yet been released. Fairfield police have described her as a white female in her early teens.

One nearby resident said he saw something suspicious in the park Friday morning.

“(I saw) a car parked in the parking lot facing south with its headlights on and a larger man standing next to his car, and it just struck me as funny all day,” said Jac Davey, a possible witness.

Fairfield police will be the lead investigating agency on the homicide, Mattos said
