WALNUT CREEK —

Burglars staged a brazen early morning robbery Tuesday at the Walnut Creek Macy’s store, smashing windows and ransacking the jewelry department, escaping with an undetermined amount of merchandise, according to the police.

Walnut Creek police Sgt. Mike McLaughlin said an alarm went off at the store around 3:15 a.m. but officers were not called to the scene by Macy’s officials until 4:28 a.m.

McLaughlin said he did not know the reason for the delay. Macy’s officials were not available for immediate comment.

Upon arrival, the officers found several windows smashed and the jewelry department ransacked.

Investigators had not gotten a chance to review surveillance video and did not know how much merchandise and cash had been stolen.
