A day after several unsuspecting commuters were robbed at gunpoint at a Rockridge carpool stop, KTVU discovered the incident's part of a disturbing trend.
Armed robberies are on the rise everywhere in Oakland, but especially in Oakland Police District 2, which includes Rockridge, Temescal and parts of the Oakland hills.
In that area, there've been nine armed robberies in the last week, a 47 percent increase over the same period a year ago.
“It's just really scary and it's unnerving since this is a neighborhood I want to stay in and feel safe in,” said Sandra Davidson, a 42-year-resident of the Rockridge area.
Police announced Tuesday that they had arrested two suspects who robbed eight commuters of their electronic devices and other items at gunpoint the morning before. One suspect was identified as 22-year-old Delante Johnson, and the other is a male juvenile whose name was not released Tuesday, Oakland police said.
After learning of the crime, at least three neighborhood watch groups along Lawton, Ocean View and Taft avenues in Rockridge were discussing the idea of hiring private security to supplement police patrols Tuesday.
“First and foremost, we need to hire more police officers,” said District 1 Councilman Dan Kalb, whose district includes Rockridge and Temescal.
Kalb said five officers from the last graduating police academy have been assigned to area 2, along with several investigators.
“We've been assigned a new investigator for robberies in north Oakland, a separate investigator for burglaries in north Oakland and we're about to get a separate investigator for assaults in north Oakland,” said Kalb.
In the meantime, some residents say they’ve been more vigilant and aware of unusual activity in their neighborhood.
“We're starting to talk to each other more, watching and letting each other know if we're going to be away,” said Davidson.
Anyone with more information on the casual carpool robbery case was asked to call the Police Department's robbery section at (510) 238-3326.
Watchdogs are questioning an exclusive agreement between the City of Oakland and a non-profit group, tapped to lead a multi-million dollar project to redevelop the area around the Coliseum BART station.
