OAKLAND, Calif. —

A California Highway Patrol motorcycle fatally hit a female pedestrian in Oakland Friday night, according to CHP officials.

At approximately 10:04 p.m. a collision between a woman and a CHP motorcycle occurred on West MacArthur Blvd, just west of Market Street, according to the CHP.

CHP Sergeant Roberto Barrera was driving a 2004 BMW patrol motorcycle and traveling west on West MacArthur Boulevard when a woman stepped off the sidewalk and began running across the traffic lanes and directly into the path of the patrol motorcycle, according to the preliminary investigation.

The motorcycle struck the 43-year-old, African-American woman. She was thrown into the road, and sustained major injuries.

Sergeant Barrera was thrown from the motorcycle and landed in the road, sustaining moderate injuries.

Both were transported to the hospital, where the pedestrian died as a result of her injuries. The CHP officer was treated and released.

Oakland police and the CHP both responded to the scene of the collision and the incident remains under investigation.

Barrera is now on paid administartive leave.

The CHP said the Sgt. was on-duty at the time of the crash, but he was about to take the on-ramp to 580 to go home.

Witnesses at the scene said they had seen the woman in the area before, but she has not yet been identified.

Any person with information germane to this incident was asked to contact the CHP at (510) 450-3821 or the Oakland police at (510) 777-3333.
