OAKLAND, Calif. —

Well-known comedian Katt Williams was arrestedĀ for battery in Oakland Wednesday night for allegedly hitting a man in the head with a bottle, according to authorities.

Police said the 41-year-old Williams assaulted the man in downtown Oakland at about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Investigators said a fight broke out aboard a tour bus that was parked outside the Courtyard Marriott on Broadway.

Williams allegedly smashed the man in the head with the bottle, causing lacerations.

The man told the police he had sustained his injury during a confrontation with Williams. The man was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released for a non life-threatening injury.

The victim's name and the cause of the fight have not been released.

Officers later located Williams who was arrested on suspicion of assaulting the man. After investigators interviewed Williams and witnesses, Williams was released from custody pending further investigation.

Fans were startled to hear of Williams' arrest.

"That's surprising. He's pretty big time," said witness Aremon Habibi. "I know he was doing a show out here. It's kind of shocking to hear that from a guy who has a lot to lose."

Williams is a stand-up comic, rapper and movie actor. He is scheduled to perform Friday night at Oracle Arena in Oakland.
