CONCORD, Calif. —
"The smell is horrendous, absolutely horrendous," he said. "At one time we counted roughly 60 plants in the back yard." Johnson said he worries the marijuana grow could make his neighborhood a magnet for trouble. "I've been to the police department, the city, the fire department and they all say he's legal," he said. After seeing a recent KTVU report on a backyard medical marijuana grow in Concord, city leaders said they're looking into drafting an ordinance to restrict how and where the plants can be grown. "Perhaps looking at having the growth indoors instead of outdoors, that would take care of some of the major concerns we have," said Ron Leone, mayor of Concord. Growers, in this case, said they might be willing to abide by that request. The residents of the Pittsburg pot grow were not home when KTVU tried to ask for a comment, but Johnson says he's told them his neighborhood is the wrong place to grow. "I told them before, 'You want to grow a crop? Go out to Knightsen. Go out to Brentwood where they farm,'" Johnson said. Other cities, such as Moraga, have banned outdoor marijuana grows, but in some cases, medical marijuana advocates are promising to fight them in court.
