SAN JOSE, Calif. —

Homicide detectives were investigating an early Monday morning shooting that left a man dead on a San Jose street, authorities said.

A neighbor leaving for work discovered the body in the street around 4:30 a.m. Monday.

Officers then arrived at the 2700 block of Murtha Drive and found a 30-year-old Hispanic man who'd been shot in the chest.

A resident of the block said he heard a loud fight a couple around 2 a.m. before a man was found dead on the sidewalk.

Police said the disturbance could be related to the deadly shooting.

A police lieutenant told KTVU the victim lived in the neighborhood, but he was unclear why he was targeted.

“Based on early reports, argument, everything happened here,” said San Jose police Lt. Mike Sullivan.

Police aren't saying if this shooting involved gangs, but many people say that’s an issue in the neighborhood.

The homicide was San Jose's ninth of the year. The incident happened just a block from an elementary school and children had to walk through the crime scene to get to class.

Police spent the morning knocking on doors trying to find witnesses.

Neighbors said they didn't wake up until after their street had been turned into a crime scene.

San Jose police have not released a description of the shooter they're searching for in the case.
