WALNUT CREEK, Calif. —

An armed suspect who was shot and killed by police officers at a Walnut Creek apartment complex early Thursday morning has been identified as a
22-year-old man, authorities said.

The Contra Costa County coroner's office identified Anthony Banta Jr., a Walnut Creek resident, as the man shot and killed after officers responded to an incident at the Diablo Pointe Apartments at 1450 Creekside Drive.

A 911 call with someone screaming in the background was transferred to police from county fire dispatch at 3:13 a.m., Walnut Creek police Capt. Tim Schultz said.

Officers responded to the Diablo Pointe Apartments at 1450 Creekside Drive. Shots were fired at the complex at about 3:19 a.m., Schultz said.

Police said the officers were forced to shoot Banta, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was injured, Schultz said. No other suspects were arrested nor are any others being sought, he said.

“This is an isolated incident to that apartment and the residents of the apartment complex or anywhere else in the area have no reason to feel unsafe,” said Schultz.

Nate Thomas, a neighbor, said he hears something like eight to 10 shots.

Philip Miric, another neighbor said he saw about six to 10 officers all busting in the apartment with a lot of gunfire and a lot of screaming inside.

Neighbors said they were terrified and took cover.

Investigators won't disclose the relationship between the Banta and the 911 caller; however, they said this was not a domestic dispute.

Friends of the Banta said he lived with two male roomates and they don't believe he had a girlfriend.

They said he was a hairdresser at Salon Amour in Walnut Creek  who was hardworking, kind and was known to meditate in his backyard. They are shocked by what's happened.

Neighbors said they are shocked too.

“We are human beings we have to think first before we act because the consequence is this,” said Mary Respicio, another neighbor

Investigators would not say what weapon Banta had when police shot him.

"This is an isolated incident to that apartment and the residents of the apartment complex or anywhere else in the area have no reason to feel unsafe," Schultz said.

Two officers have been placed on administrative leave, which the police chief said is standard practice until the investigation is complete.

The shooting was being investigated by police, the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office and the county crime lab, Schultz said.
